Endoscopy and Colonoscopy
Ross Memorial Hospital provides endoscopy services to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of conditions affecting the digestive system. These minimally-invasive procedures allow physicians to examine the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera, helping to detect abnormalities at an early and treatable stage.
Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)
A gastroscopy is used to examine the upper GI tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. This procedure helps identify symptoms such as swallowing difficulties, bleeding, persistent heartburn, or abdominal pain. It is also used to detect conditions such as:
- Esophageal or stomach cancers
- Ulcers or inflammation
- Polyps or abnormal tissue
- Celiac disease and other digestive disorders
During a gastroscopy, physicians can take tissue samples (biopsies) or perform therapeutic treatments, such as removing polyps or stopping bleeding.
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is performed to examine the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It is one of the most effective tools for preventing and detecting colorectal cancer. Colonoscopies are recommended for individuals with symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, or abdominal discomfort, as well as those with a personal or family history of colon polyps or cancer.
Colonoscopy allows physicians to:
- Detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous
- Diagnose colorectal cancer at an early stage
- Investigate symptoms affecting the lower digestive tract
- Monitor patients with known GI conditions
Most colorectal cancers begin as polyps and removing them during the colonoscopy significantly reduces cancer risk.
Advanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Capabilities
Both endoscopy and colonoscopy offer more than visualization. When needed, our medical team can perform additional procedures during the exam, such as:
- Biopsy collection for pathology analysis
- Polyp removal
- Treatment of bleeding
- Dilation of narrowed areas in the GI tract
These therapeutic capabilities help reduce the need for more invasive surgeries.
Your Care Team
Our endoscopy team includes a gastroenterologist, general surgeons, registered nurses and registered practical nurses. They work together to ensure that each patient receives safe, compassionate, and timely care.
Supporting Cancer Detection and Prevention
Endoscopy and colonoscopy play a crucial role in early cancer detection and monitoring. Findings from these procedures are used to guide personalized treatment plans, ensure appropriate follow-up care, and support ongoing surveillance for patients at risk of GI cancers.
