Integrated Stroke Unit
Our Integrated Stroke Unit (ISU) is a specialized hospital unit dedicated to the care of patients admitted with a stroke. Patients are provided with care on the ISU from the onset of illness through to the rehabilitation phase, and will remain on the ISU for the entirety of their admission. Our stroke care team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, recreational therapists, registered dietitians, pharmacists, and social workers.
The team will explain what tests and assessments are necessary, monitor your health, help you create and work toward goals, and assist you with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing or toileting). It is expected that once patients are medically stable they will attend lunch in the main dining room and participate in activities and therapies. Members of the team will ensure that patients are provided with resources tailored to their needs, and that there are opportunities to learn about stroke and stroke prevention.
What Items are Needed when Admitted to the ISU?
Patients admitted to the ISU will require socks and rubber-soled shoes, shaver/razor, easy fitting clothing, glasses, hearing aid(s), denture(s) or other assistive devices (if applicable), comb/hairbrush, toothpaste, toothbrush, scent-free deodorant, and nail care items. Many of these items are available in the RMH Gift Shop for purchase if required.
Please note that RMH is a scent free environment. Please do not bring or wear perfume, aftershave, or scented hand lotions.
