High-Risk Breast MRI
A High-Risk Breast MRI is an advanced breast imaging test designed for individuals who have an increased chance of developing breast cancer. This specialized screening uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create highly detailed images of breast tissue, allowing radiologists to detect abnormalities that may not be visible on a mammogram or ultrasound.
At RMH, High-Risk Breast MRI is offered as part of a coordinated breast screening pathway to support earlier detection and personalized care for patients at elevated risk.
Who Is Considered High-Risk?
A High-Risk‑ Breast MRI may be recommended for individuals who have:
- A known genetic mutation (such as BRCA1, BRCA2, or other hereditary cancer syndromes)
- A strong family history of breast cancer
- A personal history of chest radiation therapy before age 30
- A calculated lifetime breast cancer risk of 25% or greater, based on an approved risk assessment model
Eligibility is determined by your physician or specialist based on provincial breast screening guidelines. Genetic counselling and testing for patients is often referred to Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
Why High-Risk Breast MRI is Important
MRI is one of the most sensitive imaging tools available for breast screening. It can detect cancers earlier than mammography alone, particularly in individuals with:
- Dense breast tissue
- Genetic or inherited risks
- Previous breast cancer treatments
- Strong family histories
By identifying breast cancer at an early stage, patients have access to a wider range of treatment options and improved outcomes.
What to Expect During the Exam
A High-Risk‑ Breast MRI is:
- Non‑invasive
- Radiation free
- Performed with contrast to highlight breast tissue structures
During the scan, patients lie face down on a specially designed table while the MRI machine captures detailed images. The exam typically takes 30-45 minutes and is interpreted by radiologists with expertise in breast imaging.
Your results will be shared with your referring physician, who will discuss next steps or follow-up recommendations.
How to Access High-Risk Breast MRI
A referral is required from:
- A family physician
- Nurse practitioner
