Dr. Julie Leal Joins RMH as General Surgeon

(Lindsay, ON) – Ross Memorial Hospital looks forward to welcoming Dr. Julie Leal as a full-time General Surgeon beginning on September 2, 2025.

Over the past several years, Dr. Leal has been providing locum general surgery care at Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH) and at the Fort Frances Hospital in northwestern Ontario.

Dr. Leal originally completed her general surgery residency training at the University of Calgary and went on to complete research and clinical fellowship training in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York and Stanford University in California, respectively. She then returned home to Canada, taking a position as Associate Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University and starting the first Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery program at The Moncton Hospital in New Brunswick. From there, she moved on to a Clinical Associate appointment with the division of General Surgery at Toronto General Hospital.

Dr. Leal has written many scholarly articles defining management strategies for several different Hepatobiliary malignancies. She has spoken nationally and internationally on many different benign and malignant disease states related to surgical patient populations.

“I'm eager to take on the variety in scope of practice this role provides and collaborating with a team of such dedicated healthcare professionals,” Dr. Leal says. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the hard work and dedication to achieve the highest quality patient care that all of the staff at RMH share, as well as remarkable kindness and collegiality. I'm looking forward to becoming part of a close-knit community and providing expert care to patients."

Dr. Leal has strong family ties and origins in the Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough region and is keen on returning to her roots and joining the team at Ross Memorial Hospital.
