Hospital CEO participates in Diabetes Event - as a patient

As a physician, Dr. Bert Lauwers knows the symptoms and risks of diabetes.

This month, Dr. Lauwers will take a closer look at the fastest growing disease in the world:  he will adopt a diabetes lifestyle on November 23rd and 24th to learn about the effects of the disease as a patient. Dr. Lauwers will test his glucose, monitor his blood pressure, follow a healthy meal plan and exercise.

Everyone is encouraged to learn about diabetes

To help raise awareness of the signs and risks of diabetes in this community, Ross Memorial Hospital’s Health First program and other community partners will host a Diabetes Health Fair at Loblaws (upstairs) in Lindsay on November 25th.

The event will run from 10am to 2pm, featuring stations where participants can speak to healthcare professionals, test their blood pressure and blood sugar level, and learn the signs and risks of diabetes.

Participants will learn about the “Sages” exercise program, the Family Health Team walking club, eye and foot care, Community Care CKL, RMH Cardiac Rehabilitation and “Heartwise” exercise links, sleep apnea, and the Diabetes Education program at RMH. The Loblaws Pharmacy will be offering free flu shots for participants who have their health card with them, as well as blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. The in-store dietitian will be available for grocery tours.

Transportation to Loblaws will be available from the Victoria Park Armoury and Village Housing. The Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes van will loop every 30 minutes from 10am to 1pm.
